10 Good Daily Habits to Improve Your Life

Here are 10 good daily habits to improve your life.

Take Moments Throughout Your Day

A different but very good daily habit you can do is to take moments throughout your day. These moments are like mini-meditations. They are sometimes referred to as a Pause or a Power Pause. Whether it be at work, at home, or even on a lonely stretch of country road, you can spare a couple of minutes to stop, get quiet, and just contemplate the universe. Just relax, breathe deeply, and get into a contemplative state.

When you take a moment it is like a little stress reliever. You just relax, compose yourself, and then when you’re done you just gather yourself and take that refreshed attitude and power your way til the end of the day, or your next mini-moment, whichever comes first. Try doing 3 or 4 of these every day to see what effect it has on your day and on your life.

Meditation

Meditation is one of the good daily habits you can use to improve your life. Meditation helps relieve any stress you may have in life. In fact, the Mayo Clinic has a nice article about the many benefits you may receive from meditation.

Those benefits of meditation include reducing stress, increasing focus and self-awareness, reducing negative emotions, and increasing patience and tolerance, just to name a few.

Try to spend 15-20 minute a day or more in meditation. Meditation – it’s good for what ails you.

Even better, if you can manage it, is to meditate in a beautiful area out in nature. Now, you’re combining the benefits of meditation with the benefits of being in nature, which are numerous.

Reading is Another Good Daily Habit

Making time to read every day is another good daily habit. You can either read for relaxation or to “sharpen the saw” and get better or learn something. Both have their place and are beneficial to helping you improve your life.

For relaxation reading pick something you know you’ll love. That is great at getting you to look forward to something every day. And, if you pick something different that will stimulate and expand your brain to think of new and different things.

If you read to “sharpen the saw” you can take that expanded knowledge to either improve your career or business, or make things at home more interesting.

Set 3 Priorities or Goals to Accomplish for the Day

Now, if you have a business or job you can roll one or two into that category, but try to keep one thing you want to accomplish outside of that arena. This good daily habit allows you to knock to-dos off both your business and home lists. By keeping it to 3 or less you reserve only the big must-dos for this daily habit.

Exercise – It’s on Every List of Good Daily Habits

workout in nature 10 good daily habits

This one is on every list of good daily habits I see. And it’s for good reason. Exercise is great for your mood as well as your health. If you can get in the habit of doing this everyday it will make your life so much better.

Use whatever type of exercise suits you, but you’ll probably want to include cardio on a regular basis. Weight lifting, walking, yoga, crossfit, bike riding, spinning, pilates, etc. are all suitable workouts.

Usually during and after a workout you may get an endorphin release giving you a nice rush or sense of euphoria. Get use to doing this on a daily basis and you’ll even look forward to it.

Also, if you can find a way to combine your exercise with being out in nature you have a win/win situation. Both activities are major stress-relievers and offer a whole host of health benefits. Which brings us to our next good daily habit – get out in nature.

Get Out in Nature

Now, obviously this isn’t for everyone. If you live in a big city it may be difficult to find nature nearby. But, if you can, find a patch of grass and some trees somewhere and just be for awhile. Mental Floss has a list of 11 benefits of being outdoors. The list includes things like: boosting your energy, improving your vision, easing your pain, boosting your immune system, enhancing your creativity, and restoring your focus.

If you can’t find nature outside why not bring some inside? Buy some houseplants and create a mini-jungle inside your house. Plants give off oxygen which is another great by-product of having them inside. Want some ideas and inspiration? Here is a collection of Plant Rooms on Pinterest – it will open in a new window.

Admittedly, your foray into indoor nature re-creation may not be as grandiose, but, hey, it doesn’t have to be in order for you to reap the benefits. In fact, did you know that you can derive some of the benefits of nature just by looking at nature pictures? Numerous studies have been done that confirm that fact. So, as a last resort, purchase a poster of nature and hang it in your home or bedroom.

Another of the Good Daily Habits is to Eat Healthy

Eating healthy is another good daily habit to develop if you want to feel better now and have less health issues in the future. If you can, there are numerous benefits to a vegetarian diet. For instance, an article in WebMd noted that a vegetarian diet is responsible for a lower risk of death from heart disease, a lower blood cholesterol level, lower blood pressure, and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, lower cancer rates, and an overall lower rate of chronic disease.

I went vegetarian in my early 20’s for a combination of ethical and health reasons. There is also another nice benefit to going vegetarian. By doing so you can save a lot of money on the grocery bill. In fact, I’ve been vegan off and on for years (currently at over 1 year). Years ago I was vegan for a couple of years but missed Mexican food so much I had to return to simple vegetarianism. 🙂

My latest return to veganism began after a friend turned me onto the documentary, The Gamechangers. It’s all about the many benefits of veganism. Now, the movie itself, is not without controversy. Some argue that it goes too far in espousing a vegan diet for all. In fact, Dr. Mike on youtube, does a nice job of looking at both sides of the issue.

All in all, it appears, though, that increasing the amount of vegetables and fruits you consume can only benefit you and your health.

Reach out to 1 Person a Day to Maintain a Friendship

This is one good daily habit I struggle with at times. I often get so busy that when I look up the day is practically gone. This habit is good, though, for strengthening family and friend connections and keeping yourself in the Now.

When you’re connecting with another human being you are forced to “be here now.” You can focus on that person and grow and maintain that particular relationship. And, if you are a very busy person, it doesn’t mean that you have to talk to that person for an hour. For instance, I have a friend, Michael, whose mom is in her late 80’s. This guy is a busy man, but still takes the time and makes the effort to give her a quick call every day. Every single day. Think about that. He just decided to do it, and he made it a good daily habit. An impressive one at that.

Maybe, allot 15 minutes a day and just call one or two of your friends and family in that span. Now that seems doable. Don’t mind me – just talking to myself here. But, seriously, do it and you’ll not only maintain a great relationship, but I’m sure feel better after you get off the phone, or zoom, or however you choose to converse.

Good Daily Habit (or nightly) Get Plenty of Sleep at Night

You know your body better than anyone when it comes to getting enough sleep. Get the amount that you need to function at the optimal level that you can. General recommendation is 7-9 hours for most people. Younger folks and children may need more while older folks may need a little less.

In order for the best sleep you’ll want a dark room. All the jobs I’ve had over the years were usually odd hours. One of the best things I ever did was get rolling shutters for outside my bedroom window. You control it from the inside and it provides total darkness as well as security.

If you have trouble going to sleep you may want to listen to soothing music or a guided meditation or something like that. I do have a tv in my bedroom but never watch that one except for the occasional sleep meditation. Jason Stephenson on youtube has a variety of great sleep meditations that I’ve fallen asleep to on numerous occasions.

The Last Good Daily Habit is to Use a Habit Tracker

A habit tracker is simply a sheet that allows you to write down the good daily habits you want to achieve and then check them off if you are able to accomplish them for that day. I have not done this in awhile but am thinking about starting up again. The reason? It really works to motivate you to keep knocking out those items on your list every day. You see a series of checked off items and don’t want to break the streak. A great way to reinforce a good daily habit.

There are a number of free printable habit trackers on the internet. Here’s one from Jenny on the Spot. Just click that link and a new window will open. She has created both a daily habit tracker as well as a weekly one.

Now, if you want to really get serious about tracking your daily goals and habits, consider starting a Bullet Journal. It’s like a combination of habit tracker, bulleted lists and journal all rolled into one.

Combine Good Daily Habits to Save Time

One secret to not running out of time in trying to accomplish all of these habits is to combine some of them. For instance, maybe you go to the park to take a walk and while you’re on your walk you make a call to a friend. Voila! You’ve just knocked out three daily habits in one fell swoop. Or maybe you decide to go meditate or read a book in nature. Whatever your daily habits are look at ways you can combine them for ultimate effectiveness.

More Good Daily Habits from Around the Web

Darius Foroux has this good one on journaling. “Journal or write 30 minutes a day.”

And, Omar Itani, writing on Medium, has a daily habit that involves writing one line per day. As with anything in life, you become a grateful person with practice. The best method that has worked for me? One line per day. Every night before going to bed, I open my journal and ask myself: “What am I grateful for today?” And then I proceed to write one line in my journal.
